After a series of meetings in English in Baile an Sceilg, Cillín Liath, Cathair Dónall and An Gleann, there was a meeting yesterday in Irish in the office of Comhchoiste Ghaeltacht Uíbh Ráthaigh.

Main figures from the presentation made at the meeting by the South Kerry Gaeltacht Language Planning Officer Victor Bayda:

  • 10% increase in the number of Daily Irish Speakers (outside the education system) in the South Kerry Gaeltacht;
    it is the second highest increase among all the Gaeltacht areas;

  • over 75% of those who took part in our survey on the use of Irish in South Kerry reported that in the last four years they have had more people around them who they speak Irish to.
